We only use Iroko of the highest quality sourced from responsibly managed forests. All benches are made by us, we do not purchase imported benches. Each bench is assembled individually and to order, we carry no stock of finished benches. Our ability to hand carve inscriptions and motifs is a unique aspect of our business as is the very personal service you are guaranteed to receive from enquiry to delivery and installation. We carve by hand using traditional chisels, not with machines as do most other companies
Due to sustained demand the earliest we can manufacture a new order is March 2017.
Please contact us on 01993 881464, or email us to discuss your requirements or if you require any further information. You are most welcome to visit our workshops but please contact us first to ensure we will be present.
We have built up our business since 1993 and have purposely kept it as a small family business enabling us to offer the highest quality bench and service possible. Many of our (corporate) clients return with repeat orders.
Oxford Memorial Benches Ltd was incorporated in 2003 developing from a woodworking business started up in 1993. In addition to the structured learning of an engineering apprenticeship the managing director has also received training from a master carver. There is no substitute for many years of experience based on a passionate desire to produce products and give service of the highest standard.
The process of purchasing a suitable bench for a loved one is always difficult and we fully appreciate this. All our benches are made to order so that we can produce exactly what you require and with no compromise.
Our company motto is A Complete and Personal Service and we endeavour to uphold this.
Thanks once again for the great service and all the last minute changes. You have been great to deal with especially when a subject can be so emotive.
The bench that you made and installed for us is absolutely beautiful. It’s the nicest bench I’ve seen. It’s very special as it’s right next to my mother’s ashes. All our family are very happy, and I just wanted to thank you on behalf of them.
Many thanks for the great care which you took in making and installing the memorial bench for Mum. It is a really beautiful piece of craftsmanship and we all look forward to thinking of her whilst sitting on it in the garden in future years.
I’ve been to see the bench and was very pleased with it, you have made an excellent job and it has been installed beautifully, thank you very much.
Oxford Memorial Benches Ltd is owned and run by the husband and wife team of Graham and Ria Lay. All aspects of the purchase from enquiry through manufacture, delivery and installation will be handled by them personally.
They both have extensive knowledge of the timbers used and the manufacturing process and will advise on all aspects of inscription layout, timber treatment, and installation.
Born to a master carpenter and joiner, Graham was schooled in woodworking from an early age. He studied woodworking at grammar school and followed this with an engineering apprenticeship as an engineering technologist. After 22 years working in various production environments to the level of production manager within Formula 1, he then set up his own woodworking business in 1993 which has developed into Oxford Memorial Benches Ltd.
Ria has extensive experience in all areas of retail business and customer service having been born into a family-owned business. This early experience has been supplemented by many years of working in a corporate environment. She is now the first-point of contact for our clients. Ria is also fully trained on bench component manufacture as well as hand finishing of our benches. Her passion for perfection ensures you get 100% satisfaction.
Every single bench we make is individual and there is a special story to go with every one. Our business is far more than a means for us to earn a living. We consider it a privilege to make benches in memory of someone who has been special in whatever way. The examples below are only a few of the many hundreds of benches we have made.
