About Us

Get to know us better

Please be advised that we are no longer taking orders for benches. Sorry to disappoint.

There are very few top quality and caring furniture manufacturers in the UK – we recommend that you contact Woodcraft UK based in Hull to discuss your requirements.

Woodworking has been carried out by our family from our own workshops since 1955. We are proud of our traditional designs and the skill of hand craftsmanship.

The manufacture, delivery and installation of memorial benches and memorial seats is our only activity, it is not an add on business.

You are most welcome to visit our workshop so that you can see finished benches and discuss your requirements. Please contact us by phone, email or by using the  enquiry/order form.

Our joinery workshop is equipped with a combination of specialised woodworking machines and traditional hand tools. All jointing is carried out to the highest of standards to ensure lasting strength and maximum longevity of the bench.

We only purchase the highest grade of timber possible (iroko) and carry out all machining on site. Inscriptions are hand carved using traditional carving chisels and we can also carve outline motifs of birds, flowers etc to further personalise the bench. A hand carved inscription not only looks more personal but it is also a valuable security aid.

Delivery and Installation

We offer (in most cases) a delivery and installation service using our own transport. This is our preferred method of getting our benches to you.

When this is not feasible we can arrange for the bench to be delivered on a pallet. Benches have been sent to many European countries secured and protected on a pallet.

Oxford Memorial Benches Ltd is owned and run by the husband and wife team of Graham and Ria Lay. Your enquiry for a bench will be handled by them personally followed by its manufacture, delivery and installation.

They both have extensive knowledge of the timber used, the designs offered as well as any treatment required. They will advise the best installation if required.

Master Craftsman

Graham Lay

Born to a master carpenter and joiner, Graham was schooled in woodworking from an early age. This was followed by an engineering apprenticeship and 22 years working in various production environments. In 1993 he set up his own woodworking business which has developed into Oxford Memorial Benches Ltd. A highly qualified Master Craftsman and Wood Carver to a very high standard.

Customer Services

Ria Lay de Heus

Ria has extensive experience in all areas of retail business and customer service having been born into a family-owned business. This early experience has been supplemented by many years of working in a corporate environment. She is now the first-point of contact for our clients. Ria is also fully trained on bench component manufacture as well as hand finishing of our benches. Her passion for perfection ensures you get 100% satisfaction.

We hand carve all our inscriptions using traditional chisels. The inscriptions are durable and cannot be removed and is thus a valuable anti-theft measure. Also the inscription does not deteriorate over time. All inscriptions are carved in Roman style script and in upper case only. This traditional style carves well and is clear to read.

Hand carving is a skill that takes time to perfect – no machine can reproduce the detail and beauty of a hand-carved inscription. We have been professionally trained by a master carver.

Please visit our Hand Carving page to find out more about hand carved inscriptions.
